Woman on a Beach (Kvinde på strand) is a small oil painting by the Danish painter Michael Ancher, 43 by 63 centimetres. The Wikimedia Commons record dates it only to Ancher's working life, between 1867 and 1927, and names no museum; the image was taken from the auction house Bruun Rasmussen.

What you are looking at

A sea breeze lifts a white dress beside a luminous blue shoreline. The Commons record describes a woman standing on a beach and files the picture among paintings of women at the beach and women wearing bonnets. Nothing more is recorded about the sitter or the place, though Ancher spent his working life at Skagen, and the sea and its people were his usual subjects.

How it was painted

Michael Ancher was born on 9 June 1849 at Rutsker on Bornholm. He first visited Skagen, at the northern tip of Denmark, in 1874, and settled there, becoming with Karl Madsen one of the key members of the group of artists who congregated in the village each summer and are known as the Skagen Painters. In 1880 he married Anna Brøndum, a Skagen native and a painter herself, whose father owned Brøndums Hotel where the artists gathered; their home became the colony's focal point.

Ancher is best known for his paintings of fishermen, the Skagerrak and the North Sea, and of the fishing community's life. The Skagen Painters worked out of doors, taking up the plein-air and Realist methods they had encountered in Paris, and were drawn to the coast by the quality of its light. Since the Commons record gives no closer date for this canvas, it cannot be placed within his career more precisely than that.

Where it went

No museum or collection is named in the record, and the image comes from an auction house, so the painting's present whereabouts are not documented here. Ancher died on 19 September 1927. His work is otherwise well represented at Skagens Museum, which he helped found in 1908 in the dining room of Brøndums Hotel together with P. S. Krøyer, Laurits Tuxen, the pharmacist Victor Klæbel and the hotelier Degn Brøndum.
