View through Beech Trees across a Fjord (Danish: Udsigt mellem bøgestammer over en fjord) is a small oil painting by the Danish landscape painter P.C. Skovgaard, dated to the 1850s. It measures 40.5 by 64.5 cm and has been in the National Gallery of Denmark (SMK) in Copenhagen since 1940, under the inventory number KMS4278.

What you are looking at

The museum's own note, quoted in the SMK data mirrored on Wikimedia Commons, reads in Danish: "Formodentlig forestiller Landskabet en Udsigt over Vejlefjord og er malet i 1850'erne", that is, the landscape probably shows a view over Vejle Fjord and was painted in the 1850s. The same source adds that some have suggested the spot is Trellenæs. Mura's catalogue entry describes slender beech trees framing blue water and distant white sails on a clear summer day.

Beech woods were Skovgaard's signature subject. Wikipedia calls him Denmark's foremost landscape painter and notes that his large portrayals of the Danish landscape, above all its beech forests, made the beech wood a quintessentially Danish subject. Among his best known works is Beech Forest in May, a motif from Iselingen, from 1857.

How it was painted

Skovgaard was born on 4 April 1817 near Ringsted and grew up from the age of six at Vejby in northern Zealand. He entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1831, but according to Wikipedia valued outdoor study and visits to the royal painting collection, especially its Dutch landscapes, more than formal instruction. He was encouraged by the art historian N.L. Høyen and won the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1845. After 1850, Wikipedia writes, he developed a monumental manner that mattered greatly to the next generation. The decade to which this picture is assigned also brought his marriage to Georgia Schouw in 1851 and a journey to Italy in 1854-55. The sources do not say when in the 1850s the picture was made, or whether it was painted on the spot or in the studio.

Where it went

The SMK data records the acquisition as 31 December 1940. The one exhibition noted is a 1967 show in Viborg arranged by H.G. Skovgaard and H. Ditzel. Skovgaard died in Copenhagen on 13 April 1875; his sons Joakim (1856-1933) and Niels (1858-1938) both became painters. The inventory number is KMS4278. Whether the painting is currently on view at SMK is not stated in the sources consulted.
