Velvet Afternoon

A wide sweep of terracotta rises from the bottom left across a ground of deep burgundy, and a wedge of olive green comes in from the top right corner. The edges are soft and the surfaces look like suede. Nothing is depicted. Three colours meet like hills at dusk.

What is going on

Colour is doing all the work. The burgundy is the darkest and takes most of the space, the terracotta is warmer and lighter and reads as nearer, the green is cool and reads as far away. Without a line of horizon the three become a landscape anyway, because the eye insists on it. The surface is matte and grainy, closer to plaster or pigment on paper than to oil.

How to look at it

Follow the edge of the terracotta shape from the bottom left to the top right; it rises in two long waves, and the second wave is where the green touches it. That meeting point is the picture's one event. Then look at how the burgundy above is not one red but many, mottled and brushed, so that the large empty area is never empty.

Why it is in Mura

Soft Geometry, mood earth tone. On a television it does not look like a screen at all; it looks like a wall that has been painted three colours, and that is the intention.
