Unexpected Company

A large orange squash lies on a small blue stool in an empty room, and a single green pear stands on the floor beside it, looking up. Lavender wall, yellow floor, one shadow. The picture is a two-person play with no dialogue.

What is going on

The squash has taken the seat. The pear is either waiting its turn or keeping it company, and the picture refuses to say which; the tilt of the squash's stem towards the pear is the only gesture. The colours are as flat and bright as a poster, three blocks of lavender, yellow and blue, with the two fruits as the only rounded things in the room.

How to look at it

This is a picture about weight. The squash is heavy and the stool is small, and you can feel the stool holding. The shadow on the floor is painted as one clean shape, which is what gives the scene its afternoon light. Then look at the empty two-thirds of the picture on the right: the space is the third character.

Why it is in Mura

Beautifully Strange, mood vibrant. It is the simplest picture in the collection and the one that best survives being seen a hundred times, because there is nothing in it to use up.
