The Space Between

Two large soft-edged planes, one the colour of clay and one the colour of cream, lean towards each other, and between them runs a narrow channel of deep blue with a dark shadow at its foot. The gap is the subject. Everything else is there to hold it open.

What is going on

The two planes are almost touching and they never will. The blue between them could be sky seen through a canyon, water between two rocks, or simply the distance between two people who are close. The picture leaves it open and rewards each reading. The surfaces are worked like old walls, thin colour over thin colour, with the grain of the ground showing through.

How to look at it

The blue is tiny compared with the planes and it is the first thing you see, because it is the only saturated colour and the only vertical. Follow it down to the dark at the bottom, which is the one place where the two masses seem to touch. Then step back and see the whole picture as two bodies and a breath.

Why it is in Mura

Soft Geometry, mood calm. It is the most architectural picture in the collection and it suits a room with plain walls, where it reads as a window onto something narrow and blue.
