The Red Glove

A single red leather glove, far larger than any hand, lies along the arm of a lilac sofa in a pink room. On the floor beside it a poppy stands in a blue glass. Someone has just taken it off, or is about to put it on, and the room is waiting to find out which.

What is going on

The glove is painted as if it were still warm: creases at the wrist, a soft fall of the fingers over the edge of the cushion, a sheen along the knuckles. It is the only thing in the picture that has been touched. Everything else is furniture. The flower is small and alert, the one upright note in a picture of things lying down.

How to look at it

Notice how the paint changes. The wall and the sofa are built up in broad, dry strokes that leave the texture of the ground showing through; the glove is painted wetter and smoother, so that it reads as a different material without a single line to say so. The floor at the bottom is a mosaic of pale tiles and a rug that dissolves into patches of ochre. Then take in the colour: red against lilac against pink, three colours that should argue and instead settle into an evening.

Why it is in Mura

It hangs in Beautifully Strange, mood vibrant. Hung on a television it is a picture about absence: whoever wore the glove has left the room, and the room is nicer for it.
