What is going on
The scale is the story: the cup is a pool and the diver is small and perfectly poised, arms out, toes pointed, hair in a bun. The coffee has a ring of crema like the rim of deep water. Everything on the table is ordinary and everything about the dive is expert, and the picture lets both be true at once. Morning, for some people, is a discipline.
How to look at it
Follow the line of the body from the toes at the top edge to the fingertips just touching the surface; it is the longest line in the picture and it points straight into the dark. Then look at the table, which is painted in warm, dry strokes so that the cup, the spoon and the vase all cast soft, believable shadows. The cloth on the chair is the one pattern, a small domestic flag.
