The Long Way Home

What is going on

The house is going for a paddle. That is all, and it is enough. The legs are painted with the same plain seriousness as the rocks, the reeds and the pink evening sky, so the picture never winks. The shoes on the shore are the detail that makes it a story: somebody took them off, which means somebody meant to come back.

How to look at it

Look at the reflections. The house, the legs, the sun and the far shore are all doubled in the water, and the small rings around the ankles are the only sign of movement in a very still picture. The palette is Nordic: grey water, sand, pale pink, the dark greens of the headland, and the one warm accent of the roof.

Why it is in Mura

Beautifully Strange, mood dreamy, and one of the collection's quietest pictures. On a television it reads as a landscape from across the room and as a joke from up close, and both readings are meant.
