The Folded Sea

What is going on

The table is ordinary, plank and leg, painted in cream and lilac. What lies on it is the North Sea, folded like linen, painted with a knife in blues and greens with white dragged along every crest. The boat is the size of a matchbox and completely convinced it is at sea. Behind everything is a dark green wall that could be night or deep water.

How to look at it

Watch the edge where the cloth falls over the table. The waves keep going down the drop, and a wave that hangs like a fold of fabric is the picture's best idea. Then find the boat and stay with it; it is the only red in the picture and the only thing with a straight line. The paint is heavy enough to catch real light in a room, and on a screen the highlights on the foam read as texture even at a distance.
