The Flower Ferry

A small white ferry crosses a fjord under mountains, carrying a bouquet far larger than itself: peonies, dahlias, cornflowers, poppies, tied with greenery and shedding petals into its wake. On the shore a red boathouse waits. It is painted in watercolour, wet and soft, like a letter from summer.

What is going on

The boat is a working ferry, rust-streaked and plain, and the cargo is impossible and lovely. Petals come loose and drift on the water behind it, so the picture has a wake of colour. The fjord and the mountains are painted in the palest washes, and the flowers are the only place where the colour is allowed to be full.

How to look at it

Let the eye go to the flowers and then let it fall to the reflection, which is the second bouquet, upside down and softer. Then look at the far shore, where small white houses sit at the foot of the mountains: the ferry is going somewhere, and it is bringing the flowers to someone. The paper texture shows through everywhere, and the white of the page is the light on the water.

Why it is in Mura

Elsewhere, mood dreamy. It is the softest picture in the collection and it is hung in spring, when the room needs flowers and there are none yet.
