What is going on
The table is set for two and one of the two is not here yet. That is the whole event. The picture is painted with hard edges and clean shadows, closer to a poster than to a canvas, and the shadows do the talking: the long shadow of the bowl, the small one under each cup, the leaf-shapes on the wall that tell you where the tree and the sun are.
How to look at it
Read it from left to right like a sentence: fruit, then the empty middle of the table, then the napkin, then the cup, then the second cup cut off by the frame. The empty middle is the largest shape in the picture and it is not empty at all; it is the warmth of the table itself. Blue against terracotta is the collection's favourite pairing, and here it is at its plainest.
