Room for Violet

What is going on

The violet is not flat. It is scrubbed and layered, darker at the top and warmer towards the right, so that it reads as a wall in late light rather than as a colour. The grey below is a floor or a table or a shore, and the red block is the thing on it: a book, a door, a box. It is the only shape with edges, and it is placed low and to the right where the eye lands last.

How to look at it

Give it time; it is a slow picture. Let the violet become a room, the grey become a surface and the red become an object, and then let them go back to being colours. The picture works both ways and never settles. It belongs to the tradition of painting that trusts a large area of one colour to hold attention, and it does.

Why it is in Mura

Soft Geometry, mood calm. It was made to be lived with rather than looked at, and on a television it is closest to a painted wall: it changes the light in the room without asking to be noticed.
