Off Balance

What is going on

Everything leans. The blue loop is heavier on the right, the green block is cut at an angle, the bar is on the diagonal, and the red circle sits off centre inside its pink pocket like a yolk. The picture should slide, and it does not, because each weight is answered by another. That is the whole game, and it is a serious one: the balance is felt, not measured.

How to look at it

Cover the green block with your hand, in your mind, and see the picture fall over. Then cover the bar. Each of the four shapes is load bearing. The colours are chosen to be as loud as possible and to stay in tune: cobalt and lime against a pink that softens both. It is cut paper made into paint, in the family of the late collages of the twentieth century.

Why it is in Mura

Soft Geometry, mood vibrant. On a television it is the one picture in the collection that reads at any distance and any size, and it wakes a room up in the morning.
