What is going on

Everything is at its simplest: one cup, one pastry, one sugar lump, two shadows. The stripes run on the diagonal and the two objects sit on them at an angle, so the picture has movement without anything moving. The colours are the loud primaries of a French café at nine in the morning, and the crema on the coffee is the one soft shape.

How to look at it

Look at the shadows. They are painted as clean lilac shapes on the yellow stripes, and they tell you the sun is low and to the left, which is to say early. Then look at the croissant, whose layers are painted as a few flat shapes of ochre and gold that become flaky pastry from across the room. The green sugar cube is the picture's smallest joke and its best colour decision.
