Both Sides

A fig branch grows through the rusted bars of an iron fence, with one ripe purple fig hanging on the near side and two on the far side among the leaves. Behind it a wall is pink on one side of the bars and green-blue on the other. The tree has not noticed the fence.

What is going on

The title is the picture. The fence divides the world into two colours and two gardens, and the branch, which belongs to nobody, carries its fruit across the line without effort. The bars are painted with real rust, orange breaking through black, and the fig in front is the ripest thing in the picture, so heavy it pulls its stem down.

How to look at it

Look at the fig first, at the split of red and purple in its skin and the small eye at its base, and then at the bars, which are the only straight lines. The leaves on the left are painted against pink and the leaves on the right against teal, and the same green reads warmer on one side and cooler on the other. The paint is thick and knifed, the way the late Impressionists painted a garden.
