Blue Jug & Clementines

A round cobalt jug and two clementines with a leaf on a red-orange table against a yellow wall. Three colours, one shadow, no story. It is the collection's plainest still life and one of its strongest, because everything in it is exactly where it should be.

What is going on

The jug is painted in blocks of blue, each stroke a different blue, so that it turns in the light without a single drawn line. The clementines sit at its foot, one with its leaf still on, and their orange is the exact opposite of the jug's blue on the wheel. The table is warmer than the fruit and the wall is cooler than the table. That is the whole architecture.

How to look at it

Look at the handle. It is the one curve that leaves the body of the jug, and it is painted with a lighter blue along its top edge where the light lands. Then look at the shadow the jug casts to the left, long and soft, which is the only thing in the picture that tells you the time of day. The picture rewards being seen from far away, where it becomes a flag, and from close, where it becomes paint.

Slow Living, mood golden. It is hung in the collection as a rest between busier pictures, and on a television it does the same job for a room.
