Before the Day Begins

A grey sea under a grey-and-rose sky at the first light of morning, with a dark headland on the left and a thin line of orange at the horizon. The water is still. No boat, no bird, no house. It is the emptiest picture in the collection and one of the most peaceful.

What is going on

Dawn is happening slowly, and the picture has caught it before the colour arrives. The clouds are lit from below in cream and lavender, the sea takes the light in a soft band down its middle, and the cliff is still in shadow. It could be Cornwall or the west of Ireland or the coast of Jutland; it is painted in the manner of the plein-air seascape, with a loaded brush and no outlines.

How to look at it

Find the horizon first, the one straight line in the picture, and then let the eye rise into the sky, which takes up two thirds of the canvas. The clouds are painted thickly, the sea thinly, so the sky feels heavy and the water feels flat and cool. The orange at the horizon is the only warm colour and it is very little; the picture is about how much light a small amount of orange can give.
