Autumn by the Water

What is going on

The picture is built from one family of colours, rust, copper, pink and ochre, with the sea and the far hills as the only cooler notes. The sun sits in the sky like a coin and lays a path across the water. The oak leans in from the top left and the cottage answers it from the right, and between them the whole bay is held.

How to look at it

Look at the leaves. They are painted one by one, as small flat shapes, and the same shape is repeated on the path, on the wall and in the grass, so that the whole picture is made of falling leaves. Then follow the path: it starts at the bottom right, passes the stone wall and ends at the door. The picture is an invitation to walk up it.

Why it is in Mura

Slow Living, mood golden. It is the collection's autumn picture and it is hung when the season turns; on a television it makes the room warmer than the thermostat does.
