After Everyone Has Left

A table after supper: two plates wiped clean but for crumbs and a leaf of rocket, a glass of red wine still half full, a torn loaf on its board, a dish of olive oil, a pink napkin and a green one, and one empty chair. The guests have gone. The evening has not.

What is going on

This is the still life as aftermath. Nothing on the table is arranged; it is where hands left it. The fork lies across the plate at the angle of someone who has just put it down, the bread has been torn rather than cut, the salt has been used. The room around it is terracotta and plaster, the floor is tiled, and the light is the last warm light of a long meal.

How to look at it

Look for the traces. Crumbs on the board and on the cloth, a drop of oil at the edge of the dish, the fingerprint sheen on the pink glass. The picture is painted in a thick, buttery way that suits its subject: the bread crust is real paint, the linen falls in real folds. Then notice that the wine glass is the tallest thing on the table and the only thing still full. Someone is coming back for it.
