A Very Private Garden

A rust-coloured coat hangs open on a hook against a plaster wall, and where a body should be there is a garden: monstera leaves, white flowers, dark foliage, and a pair of bare feet standing on the floor beneath the hem. Someone is in there. They are growing.

What is going on

The coat is ordinary and painted plainly, worn at the cuffs, heavy at the hem. What it shelters is not. The plants are lush and quiet and entirely private, and the feet at the bottom are the only sign that this is a person and not a wardrobe. The picture is about what people carry inside their clothes and do not show, and it is gentle about it.

How to look at it

Look at the feet first, then the flowers, then the hook. The composition is a single vertical in the exact centre of a wide, empty wall, so the figure stands like a saint in a niche. The wall is painted with thick horizontal strokes of cream, which is what gives the picture its calm. Then look at the one leaf that escapes past the collar: the garden is not entirely contained.
