What is going on

Nothing is happening and everything is held. Her hair is up, her face is turned away, her hands cradle the fruit, and the picture gives her the whole left half and gives the wall the rest. The green of the dress is built from a dozen greens, the wall from a dozen lilacs, and the two colours sit together the way they do in a garden at dusk.

How to look at it

Look at the hands. They are the most carefully painted part of the picture, and they are doing the whole story. Then look at the orange, painted round and simple with one highlight, and then at the empty wall to the right, which is not empty at all but broken into small square strokes that shift in colour like plaster in changing light. The picture is a colour study wearing a portrait.

Elsewhere, mood calm. It is hung as the collection's still centre, and it is one of the works that reads best on a large screen, where the knife marks in the dress become visible from the sofa.
