A Little Longer

A woman rests her head on a man's shoulder on a park bench under a tree, and their dog sits at his knee, looking up, lead in hand. Beyond the wall the sun is going down over a river and a town with a spire. Nobody is in a hurry to move.

What is going on

Three creatures and one decision: whether to go home. The woman has closed her eyes. The man is looking at the dog. The dog is looking at the man. The lead is slack. Everything in the picture says five more minutes, and the pink sky, painted in thick, broken strokes, says it will not last.

How to look at it

The paint is laid on with a knife in the manner of the late nineteenth century, and the picture is full of colour where you would expect grey: violet in the shadows of the white trousers, orange in the leaves, green in the bench. Look at the two hands, hers folded in her lap and his holding the lead, and at the red scarf that ties her to the red collar of the dog. Then look past them at the water, which is the picture's other subject.

Why it is in Mura

Slow Living, mood calm. It is one of the few works in the collection with people in it, and on a television in the evening it is a picture of exactly the thing the people watching are doing.
