A Horse at the Window

A dark horse leans in through an open window into a pink room and looks down at an orange on the sill. The chair by the wall is empty. It is a picture about a visit, and about the second before somebody notices there is a horse in the kitchen.

What is going on

The horse is painted with more seriousness than the joke requires, and that is what makes it work. Its coat is a dozen dark greens and blues laid over each other with a knife, its eye is wet and patient, and its nostril is almost at the fruit. The room, by contrast, is all warm plaster: pink walls, a slab of light across the corner, the edge of a picture frame, a wooden chair. Two worlds meet at the sill, and the orange is the border post.

How to look at it

Start at the eye and follow the line of the head down to the orange; that diagonal is the whole composition. Then let the picture widen: the green window frame, the pale morning outside, the way the light on the far wall repeats the colour of the fruit. The horse is enormous and the orange is tiny, but the picture gives them exactly equal weight.
